Career Change

When the power is gone, the water is dirty, and the food supplies are running low, your knowledge of HTML is not going to be as useful as you think it is.

There are many careers out there that are just based on the luxury world that we currently live in. When you think about the basics of human life, there are very few jobs that are going to translate and be useful in a survival situation. You are most likely going to be part of a community of survivors and are going to have to provide a useful service if you don’t want to become a burden. The leaders in a survival situation are going to have to make tough choices, like boot out the telemarketers if they don’t want to get their hands dirty while fixing a water filtration system or planting crops.

Some careers that are going to be in high demand in an apocalyptic world are those that are related to building or fixing something. Plumbers mechanics, and carpenters are going to be in high demand. Those kinds of tradesmen are also going to be required to take on a few apprentices. If you wan’t to be relevant, be an apprentice.

Being an apprentice is going to be the new career for all of the lawyers economists, politicians and other social elite. The thought of a politician covered up to their elbows in 70 weight gear oil brings a smile to my face.

What I would suggest, is that communities around the world get together for public meetings in a central area and form up into groups based on skill sets. The “useless jobbers” will have to join with the other, more useful groups and then everyone will work together for the greater good. This society is going to have to be founded on the basis that there will be absolutely NO GREED and that everyone will be working towards keeping the community alive. Greed has led us into very bad situations and it can only make a survival situation worse.

P.S. Bicycles will be the main form of transportation so you might want to figure out how to fix your kids bike when you get home from wall street.
